Oregon State Police

-OSP IS CURRENTLY FEDERALLY DEPUTIZED-

The Oregon State Police that has jurisdiction across the state of Oregon. enforces all of Oregon’s criminal laws and assists local law enforcement agencies.

The agency differs from other state police highway patrol agencies in that OSP has many other areas of specialization and responsibility. In addition to the Patrol Division, OSP has a Criminal Division (detectives, arson, explosives), SWAT, DPU (Dignitary Protection Unit), MRT (Mobile Response Team), a Forensic Services Division (crime labs), a Fish and Wildlife Division (game wardens), a Medical Examiner’s Division, an Oregon State Fire Marshal Division, as well as monitoring the security of the state’s Lottery.

Recent Controversies: 

  • Deputized by U.S. Marshalls to act as federal agents

 

Alleged Duties:

Enforcing the traffic laws on the state’s roadways, investigating and solving crimes, conducting post-mortem examinations and forensic analysis, and providing background checks and law enforcement data. Regulation of gaming, the handling of hazardous materials and fire codes, and educating the public on fire safety and enforcing fish, wildlife, and natural resource laws.

Uniforms:

OSP Badge is a 5-pointed silver or gold star, with “Oregon State Police” in the center circle. In the center circle is the same design as the OSP patch; an eagle holding a shield with nature designs that says “the Union”

OSP uniform is a fairly typical set of police blues. Light blue button up utility shirts, and navy pants with a light blue line along the outside seam.

Navy blue jackets with a reflective strip horizontally across the chest are also part of the OSP uniform; as are flat brimmed hats with a gold emblem on the front.

 

 

Vehicles: 

OSP has an unusually varied fleet. Trucks, SUVs, and sedans; most recently in silver with not-very visible markings. Previously black and yellow Chargers were used, and may still be in use today.
